The first wet race of the season, and the first wet race ever for quite a few people, started losing competitors very early on. First to go was Tero Turtiainen. Having always been able to take the fast left-right curves that lead to the pit lane entrance at full speed throughout practice, on the first time through his car suddenly twisted left into the wall for no apparent reason. Mathias also lost control on the same part of the circuit 11 laps later. The chicane just after the pit entrance also claimed several competitors. Dave Shaw smashed into it doing 140mph, Oliver was forced into it when he wasn't allowed into the pit lane, but Grant Reeve was lucky to miss the wall and span 10-12 times down the main straight at 270kph! And then did a repeat performance the next lap, suffering no damage! His luck was in vain, however, after a distraction by a flat mate his concentration was broken, slid of the track, and was rammed by a computer car travelling at high speed. A dramatic end to Axel Brun's race saw him sideswiped into the pit wall, just before the end of his race. Bouncing back into the path of Damon Hill, two sets of front wings were destroyed and a mad dash for the finish line saw Axel just pip Damon by 2 tenths of a second.

Mark Wendt looked to finally have the better of Rob Buis as he took the lead on lap 40, only to misjudge the braking point into the hairpin, and he ran into the back of Jean Alesi. He pitted, but as soon as he was back on the track he spun at the esses and damaged his front wing again, losing a massive amount of time limping around almost a whole lap. Even Rob Buis had a accident in the bad conditions after sliding into a wall and damaging his front wing, demonstrating that he is not invicible after all.

In short: Lots of slipping, lots of sliding, and not much forward motion.
