Following the vast destruction at Imola, the season moved to the glamourous setting of Monaco for the first in the trio of Christmas races.

The qualifying session saw Red Five Renault`s Robert Schaftlein shock the Nightmare team by taking pole position from them for the first time this season.

Howver, Rene Smit recovered from this setback by claiming victory in the race by an impressive 25 seconds from Oliver Roberts. Even more impressive is the fact that Smit had damaged his nose on lap 21, while Roberts reported having a `near perfect` race. Third was Nuno Maltez who struggled home with a damaged nose following a crash 4 laps from the end. Despite having two crashes, Graham Hawkins finished 4th and also got the fastest lap of the race.

Hawkins wasn`t the only person to have an unwelcome attraction between his car and the walls. Indeed, many competitors found it difficult to avoid damaging their car on this tight street circuit, although 17 out of 27 starters did succeed in completeing the race distance. Of the non-finishers, sympathy has to go to Andrew Middleton of the aptly named Carnage Crew who only managed 4 laps.

After four races, Roberts (last year`s championship runner-up) has a 10 point lead at the top of the Drivers` Championship table. His team - DigiTech - are also looking like being strong challengers for the Constructor`s title.
